In my first year
studying anatomy and physiology
I was assigned
a large cat swimming in formaldehyde
I named him Lazarus and cried
when I cut into his face, but marveled
at the bones unhinged,
and the pink muscles, and the gray
I sliced one kidney in three parts
isolating the cortex, ureter and veins.
I received high marks,
then tucked it safely back inside,
lest he be left incomplete.
